Maria’s ‘CIA’ link echoes Hindraf’s ‘Tamil Tiger connection’

Human rights advocate Waythamoorthy says in acting against Hindraf, the authorities linked it to the Tamil Tigers but this was never proven.

KUALA LUMPUR: Bersih 2.0 chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah has reportedly been linked by the police and Umno to the CIA and is said to have “engaged in activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy”.

Describing it as “ludicrous”, Waythamoorthy said it was similar to the claims against Hindraf Makkal Sakthi when the police acted against it.

Waythamoorthy added in a statement: “The claims against Hindraf activists were never proven.”

He believes there isn’t even a shred of evidence against the Bersih 2.0 chief. “That doesn’t seem to stop them. They are abusing their position,” he said.

He said: “The government and its agencies continue with their arrogance and wayward ways. They are bent on suppressing the voice of the people.”

He asked if, “in the Malaysian Government’s language”, the CIA was a terrorist organisation.

“What’s the document that has been linked to Maria?” he asked. “Umno Information Chief Annuar Musa should explain since he raised the issue.”

He recalled that Hindraf activists, likewise, were once linked to the Tamil Tigers, “based on a document, as in Maria’s case”.

“The document — in the Hindraf case — was a police report that 31 activists were linked to the Tamil Tigers,” he said. “The Tamil Tigers — of Sri Lanka — were listed as an international terrorist organisation.”

Hindraf was subsequently declared unlawful by the home minister, he said.

He said it was “amazing” that a similar method was being used against Maria and Bersih 2.0.
