Global Indians

Twenty million Indians live overseas, spanning across Asia, Africa, Britain, the U.S., the Emirates, and several small countries in the Caribbean. In Mauritius, Fiji, Suriname, and Guyana their histories are entangled with nineteenth-century European colonialism and indenture. This slide-talk highlights the migration stories of Indian diaspora communities—their successes and the social and political challenges they face in their new homelands.

Maina Chawla Singh is a scholar-in-residence at American University, where her current research includes a study of Indians in the French Caribbean Islands. Singh has published several scholarly articles and is the author of Being Indian, Being Israeli: Migration, Ethnicity and Gender in the Jewish Homeland and Gender, Religion, and ‘Heathen Lands’: American Missionary Women in South Asia (1860s–1940s).
