Hindu houses burned down after play offends Muslims

April 3, 2012 : Muslims in Bangladesh burned down at least ten Hindu homes in the area of Satkhira, in Bangladesh, after a drama at Fatehpur School in Kaliganj.

The drama was staged as part of the Independence Day celebrations. However, Muslims claimed that the play, held at the school, disrespected the prophet of Islam.

The head teacher, who was subsequently arrested as part of an investigation into blasphemy charges, is a Muslim. The playwright, who is a teacher at the schools, was also arrested.

The Bangladeshi online newspaper bdnews24.com reports that, according to witnesses, a group of Muslim residents of the area attacked the homes of Hindus after a dispute broke out during an arbitration session on the matter of the drama.

At least ten houses were vandalized and robbed, and at least four were set on fire. Some of the Muslim residents of the area prevented fire fighters from reaching the burning buildings.

The area is a stronghold of the militant Jamaat-e-Islami.
