Symposium: Forced Labour in India and their Living Hell!

Sri Sri Ravishankarji, Mr R. Venkatramani, Sr. Advocate, Mr Muchukand Dubey, Mr. Richard Benkin and other distinguished personalities are also associated with HRDI.
In the past, we have taken up the issues of Indian Workers in Gulf, Bhutanese Refugees, Sri Lanka War Crimes, Visa Extension of Taslima Nasrin, Witch Hunting in India and have lent voice to various unaddressed issues.
This time we bring forth the issue of “Forced Labour in India” – the voice of whom is unheard and this inhuman practice has continued unabated since times immemorial. Forced labour is a serious and pervasive problem globally.
Every day millions in India wake up to a life of oppression; a life they are not free to leave – the life of forced labour! Forced labour is not only a violation of fundamental rights but is also an offence against human dignity where an individual is compelled to provide labour or service against their wish.
The ILO estimates that at least three out of every 1,000 persons worldwide are suffering in forced labour. In around 10 per cent of cases, the State and their policies are directly responsible for the same. These forced labourers are made to work under conditions which violate recognised labour /human standards.
This coerced form of manpower takes different forms, including debt bondage, trafficking and other forms of modern slavery. The victims are often the most vulnerable groups such as those who are un-organised labour, members of Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe, women and girls forced into prostitution, migrants trapped in debt bondage and sweatshop, mine or farm workers kept there by illegal means and paid little or nothing.
“Whatever their background, they are the living, breathing reminders that the work to eradicate slavery remains unfinished.”
To understand various ramifications of this complicated issue, HRDI is organizing a symposium “Forced Labour in India- the voiceless and the defenseless and their living hell!” at Malaviya Smriti Bhawan, 52-53, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Marg, ITO, Opposite Comptroller & Auditor General of India (CAG) New Delhi -110002 on 14th September (Saturday), 2013, 10:30 am – 2:00 pm.
